Best Schools in Ogden, Utah: A Parent's Guide (2026)

by Megan Smith

If you're moving to Ogden with kids, the school question usually comes up before the kitchen or the yard. Ogden has a lot of options: a full public school district, two traditional high schools, a high school on a technical college campus, and several charter schools within a few miles of downtown. The tricky part is matching a specific house to a specific school. I put this guide together to help with that. It lists every public and charter school serving Ogden for the 2026–27 school year and answers the questions parents ask me most.

1. How the School System in Ogden Is Organized

Most homes inside Ogden city limits are served by Ogden School District (district office: 1950 Monroe Blvd, Ogden, UT 84401). The district's grade structure is a little different from some neighboring districts, so it helps to know it up front:

  • Elementary: Pre-K or kindergarten through 6th grade
  • Junior high: 7th through 9th grade
  • High school: 10th through 12th grade

One important note: an "Ogden, UT" mailing address does not guarantee Ogden School District. Many homes in North Ogden, South Ogden, West Haven, Pleasant View and unincorporated Weber County use Ogden ZIP codes but are served by Weber School District. Always check the specific address (more on that below).

A few things worth knowing about these schools:

  • New Bridge School is the district's STEM magnet elementary, and the district also runs an Advanced Learning Academy magnet program.
  • The district offers the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Program, and Ogden High School lists 14 IB courses and 38 concurrent enrollment courses, where students can earn college credit while still in high school.
  • OTECH High opened in fall 2024 on the Ogden-Weber Technical College campus, a first-of-its-kind partnership in Utah. Students stay enrolled at their boundary high school while taking core classes and technical college courses there, and tech college programs are free to Utah high school students.
  • The district offers English/Spanish dual language immersion at the elementary and junior high levels.
  • Hillcrest Elementary is in a brand-new building. When it opened, the district redrew some elementary boundaries north of 12th Street (affecting Hillcrest, East Ridge, Heritage and Lincoln), so if you looked up a north Ogden address a couple of years ago, check it again.

3. Charter Schools in Ogden

Charter schools are free public schools that anyone can apply to, no matter where you live. Most admit students by lottery when they have more applicants than seats.

  • NUAMES and the Weber State University Charter Academy are both on the Weber State campus. The WSU Charter Academy currently serves kindergarten and first grade, and applications open each semester.

4. A Parent's Guide: Your Questions Answered

How do school boundaries work in Ogden?
Every home in Ogden School District is assigned to one elementary school, one junior high and one high school based on its address. Boundaries are set by the district's Board of Education and can change, usually when a school opens, closes or gets crowded. Ogden has seen several of those changes in recent years: Bonneville Elementary closed at the end of the 2024–25 school year and its students moved to the new Hillcrest Elementary, and the board approved new elementary boundaries for the north end of the city in 2025.

How do I check which schools a specific address feeds into?
Don't rely on a listing's school info or a map app; those are often out of date. Use the district's own tools:

  1. For homes in Ogden School District, use the Boundary Maps & School List page and the Find My School tool on ogdensd.org.
  2. If the address may be in Weber School District (common for North Ogden, South Ogden, West Haven, Pleasant View and county addresses), check Weber School District's boundary maps.
  3. Call the school directly to confirm. They'll tell you in a two-minute phone call, and it's the most reliable answer you can get.

When I'm working with a family, I check this for every home on our short list before we write an offer.

Can my child attend a school outside our boundary? (Open enrollment)
Yes, in many cases. Utah has open enrollment, which means you can apply for a school other than your assigned one, inside Ogden School District or even in another district. Ogden School District calls these boundary exceptions. Acceptance depends on whether the school has room, and the main application window for the next school year runs each winter, with later applications considered if space remains. Dates change year to year, so check with the district (801-737-7300) for the current window. Keep in mind that busing usually isn't provided when you attend a school outside your boundary.

What about charter schools? Do I need to live nearby?
No. Charter schools accept applications from any address. Each school runs its own application and lottery, usually in the winter for the following fall, so apply early and get on waitlists for more than one if a charter is part of your plan.

Do schools affect home values in Ogden?
They do. Homes inside the boundaries of schools that families seek out tend to get more buyer interest and hold their value well, because the next buyer is often a family too. Boundaries can shift, so I tell my clients to buy a home they love in a location that works, then treat the school assignment as a big plus rather than the only reason. If you're an investor, the same rule applies to rentals: family renters ask about schools first, and a home near a sought-after elementary is often easier to keep rented.

What should I ask before I buy?

  • Which elementary, junior high and high school serve this exact address today?
  • Has the district changed boundaries here recently, or is a change being discussed?
  • Is there busing from this street, or will we drive or walk?
  • If we want a charter or a different district school, what are the application dates and is there a waitlist?
